Animal Friends' Home-To-Home Adoption Program Presents... Nickels and Guinness!

My wife and I have a rapidly growing family and just cant find the time to give our two dogs the love and attention they need anymore. Because they have been apart of our lives for so long we cant bring ourselves to just drop them off at a shelter so we are hoping that the Animal Friends Home to Home program will help us find a new home for each of them. They are completely up to date with all of their shots. So with that being said I’d like to introduce you to Nickels and Guinness.

Nickels is a neutered 8 year old black Labradoodle. I’ve had Nickels since 2005 when he was about 9 months old when I adopted him from a family up in Wexford (apparently the wife was allergic to Labradoodles…go figure). Although he was a pretty big “puppy” at 65 lbs, his seemingly unending energy and affection won our hearts immediately. Today he tips the scales at around 95 lbs and although is approaching 8 this May you would never it as he still has enough energy to keep up with anybody. We know he won't work out well with other “non-dog” pets in the house but will get along fine with other dogs. He’s also amazing with children and people of all ages (even small babies and toddlers as my daughter is 2). I take him to the dog park regularly so he has no trouble making new friends. He’s house broken and is OK with being indoors most of the day as long as you make it up to him with a nice long walk when you get home. He’s extremely healthy having only fed him Purina dry dog food but also enjoys the occasional raw hide.

Guinness (or Guinni as my daughter likes to call him) has been with us since January 2009 when we rescued him from the Humane Society as a neutered 8 week old 11 lb Rot/Boxer mix puppy. Today Guinness has outgrown his big brother and has reached a top weight of 99 lbs. He’s in extremely good shape, LOVES to play and is very affectionate, as he will soak you with kisses and shove his head under your arm to be petted. He’s also great with babies and children (my daughter likes to ride him like a pony and he loves it!) and like Nickels, gets along extremely well with other dogs. I would not recommend putting him in a home that has cats and other non-canine members. He’s been on the same diet as Nickels only having Purina dry dog food but will pretty much eat anything you put in front of him. He’s also completely house broken and out of the “chewing” puppy stage.

They can go together or separate, it doesn’t matter to us as long as they both find new owners that can give them all the love and attention they deserve. As part of the screening process, I am not asking for a rehoming fee but a quick home visit is required prior to adoption. Finally, I’m also offering a “lifetime” guarantee on both of these guys. So if you take one or both into your home and for ANY reason you change your mind at ANY time even YEARS down the road I will gladly take them back off your hands and find them new homes with absolutely no questions asked (I’m actually begging you that you do this as they deserve better then just being cast aside in a shelter).

Hey - I’m Ainsley! If you are looking for a fun, handsome and masculine cat, look no further. I am very athletic. I enjoy sprinting, vertical leaping, gymnastics, soccer, and most activities involving a string. By far my favorite sport is MMA! I excel in grappling, jiu-jitsu, and boxing. I prefer to have a willing feline participant who can go all three rounds.

When not perfecting my latest my Thai techniques, I enjoy lounging. I like to curl up with another cat or beside my human. I love attention and will allow you to pet me all day.

The ideal home for me would be with at least one other playful cat and one or two adults. I am not a fan of strangers, noise, or being picked up. I am always in a good mood and I tend to be pretty gentle. I am an alpha cat, but do get shy around people. I do not like to be locked in or out of a room if it means I am not with my human. If you are looking for a special companion who will bring you years of laughter and kindness, then let me outta here and take me home!

Animal Friends' Home-to-Home Adoption Program presents Odie

Odie is a 20-month old chocolate lab. He is AKC registered and kennel trained. He has been neutered and has a microchip tracker (not currently monitored).

He is a very good dog and would make a great pet for someone with lots of space for him to run. We keep him on a wireless collar in our yard when he is outside but he needs lots of activity and unfortunately our household is active in other ways. We are quite sad to say goodbye to Odie but feel that this breed was not the right choice for our family and we want to find a good, active home for him.

Animal Friends Hosts First-Ever Speed Dating Event for People and Their Pets

Nervous butterflies overcame my belly when I turned left to cross the bridge leading to Animal Friends. I was a little early for the seven o'clock event: Must Love Dogs, a speed-dating event for singles and their dogs.

Gentle snow flakes flittered over the dark parking lot while I looked for a space. The number of cars suggested the turnout for the speed dating event was big. Now I was really tense and shaky. I felt like I was going to a major job interview, or actually 31 job interviews all within an hour-and-a-half.

And the job at hand was to seek out romance, a sentiment I haven't found during daily life, blind dates set up by friends, or through some on-line dating sites.

I turned off my car and peered around the parking lot. I could see sillouettes of people's heads next to doggy heads in many of the cars. They were other participants who were possibly also a touch nervous and hesitant about the event. They were all facing the front door to Animal Friends, perhaps waiting for other brave souls to venture before them.

I got our of my car and headed towards the entrance when I was hit with a scary thought. Was I being sized up by the ladies in the cars as a potential mate? Is this snow messing with my hair? Is my shirt collar straight? How does my behind look in these jeans? It was like the brown concrete walkway was transformed into a red carpet.

I slapped on my name tag and entered the event. Lots of dogs of all sizes and breeds. A rather large mutt greeted me with a slobbery lick of my hand and a kiss on the cheek. Normally I wouldn't go on a date with dog dribble on my face. But this was Must Love Dogs. I can use the drool to my advantage.

I lifted my eyes from the dogs and surveyed the pretty ladies and, let's be frank, potential companions. I admit I was slightly happy to be among the minority - we men were outnumbered by almost 3-1. Great odds.

Christy, my co-worker and organizer of the event, rallied us men to sit at a few tables that formed a U shape.

"Group One, you're on!" she announced. Each of the eleven women (the women had been divvied into three groups ) chose a seat across from a potential suitor. We had a little over two minutes with each participant, and my first date was determined to make the most out of that time.

"Have you been married? Do you have kids? How old are you? Do you smoke? Do you go to bars?" she diligently asked. I answered fast and honest. Then Christy blew the whistle.

"Time to move," she commanded. Like a conveyor belt on an asembly line, the ladies stood up and walked to the next candidate. We men stayed in our seats.

Many of the participants had dogs, which made for a few easy opening lines. "What's your dog's name? What kind is he/she? Where did you get her/him?" I'd ask. Although I absolutely love dogs, I do not have one. So I had to explain 31 times that I have cats because I'm just too busy to have a dog.

Some meetings went well--so well that I didn't want Christy to blow the whistle. Other dates were not so good. "Please Christy, blow that whistle," I'd think to myself.

My throat was sore and my voice was cracking by the time the third group came around. I struggled slightly to speak to my date over the fun but slightly loud howls from the dogs. But hey, If you must love dogs, you must love their barks.

We each had a sheet where we wrote the person's name and a check a box to indicated wheather we wanted to see that person again. At the end of the event, Christy gathered the notes and is currently making the connections. She's a temporary Chuck Barris, for those of you who remember The Dating Game.

I usually spend my Friday nights with my good buddy and his two wonderful kids, playing card games and watching Swamp People on TV. As fun as that is, I will not meet a my special someone that way. So I thank Christy for bringing this wonderful idea to Animal Friends. This idea took me out of my comfort zone. And to quote author Brian Tracy, "You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable."

Animal Friends' Home-To-Home Adoption Program Presents... Clyde!

I so sadly have to give up my little dog Clyde. I am trying to find him a loving home. I am not asking for a fee but I will be particular who takes him. I originally adopted him when he was about 4 months old and have had him about a year and a half....so he is around 2 years old right now. So yes, he still has a lot of pup left in him. He is a mix of black Labrador and our veterinarian seems to think some sort of hound. As you can see in the pictures he looks more like a black lab with the hound body and tail.

One of the pictures I attached shows his size compared to my other dog a full blooded chocolate Labrador. He only weighs about 35 pounds and is tall and lean. He is neutered and is completely kept up on all vaccinations. I will admit he is spoiled; he is a house dog and loves to cuddle. He believes he can talk by looking at you with his mouth open puts out a friendly growl/howl and actually tries to communicate with humans. He also thinks he’s a lap dog. He will pat you with his paw then crawl right up on you and press his neck against you for hugs. He is very loving. He sleeps in bed with either my son or I and feels at home when cuddling against someone. I know I may have spoiled him a bit too much. His personality is outgoing. There are many adorable habits such as he is infatuated with socks. Try to put them on in front of him and he will steal them right from your hand and just want to play tug. Also, he loves heat. He will lie in front of the furnace vent or find you the minute he hears a hairdryer.

He is great with my 11 year old son and all of his friends that come and go through my house. He has never been around very small children so I truly don’t know how he would be in that situation. As for my sons age…he is great. My son will actually play football with him and he roughhouses with no out of hand actions. Also, he has become very attached to my other dog. Even though they may seem to play too rough or wild....it’s what dogs do, and they love each other. It’s obvious when they lie together and cuddle. So, if there is anyone that happens to have another dog that may be a plus but is not necessary. He has not had much other interaction with any other dogs. We have had him at the dog park one time when there was other dogs that had walked by the fence and he ran along the fence barking at them. The only other dogs he sees are from our front window walking down our street and yes barks at them too.

Unfortunately, I am in a situation that having 2 dogs is just too much. It is difficult financially and also with the lack of training. I work full time and the dog does not get as much attention as I feel he should. He does need more training that I just cannot give to him. I must say he is very smart and a quick learner. The few commands and tricks I have taught him he caught on extremely fast. He just chooses when to actually listen to certain commands again due to lack of consistent training. I truly believe if he had a loving home with someone who was available to spend more time dedicated to him it would be better for him and that he would grow to be a very well trained dog. I know as he grows older it is going to take work to train him correctly which I do not have. I really do not want to have to place him into any type of kennel or shelter. I hate to see him go to anyone that will not provide for him what he deserves. And I also know how hard it is to get the older dogs adopted. I would love to find someone who could be a good fit for my little dog Clyde. Please to feel free to contact me at any time day or night with any questions. Charlene needs a home!

Charlene – “Char” to her friends -- was adopted from Animal Friends many years ago as a healthy young dog. She developed insulin dependent diabetes earlier this year. Her adopter was caring for her until recently, when events in his own life caused him to no longer be able to care for his beloved companion, and she was returned to us. We have been caring for Char here in the shelter and she has been an excellent resident and patient. She is ready to find her forever home with someone who understands her special needs.

Char is ten, but she has aged well. She has matured into a lovely dog who still has plenty of energy for walks and play time, yet is happy to relax and lounge around with you in your down time. Char has gotten along well with other dogs she has met during her time here, but would do best in a home without cats. If you have a dog in the home, we’d love to assist with an introduction!

Char's condition does require that she eat a special food, and take injections daily. The medical staff at Animal Friends would be happy to provide training on how to give insulin if you'd be willing to learn. Insulin is one of the few medications where timing matters, so Char's forever home would need to be able to ensure that someone would be available for her every 12 hours. As with any animal with special medical needs, vet visits happen more often and Char's new family should be willing to take on this added responsibility. Char needs to go to a low stress home because, much like humans with diabetes, her immune system is not as strong, potentially making her more prone to infections. We’ve also found that Char has developed some heart valve insufficiency – likely due to her diabetes as well as being an older girl – and she is on medication for that as well. As wonderful as Animal Friends is, we all know that the shelter life can be stressful at times and we’d love to find Char a forever home where she can enjoy her “golden years” with a caring family.

Char is sure to win you over with her soft brown fur and affectionate, loving personality. Once you've fallen in love with her (and we're sure you will!), it's easy to set up a meeting with a member of the Animal Friends medical team to go over the details of her care. If you have the type of home that would work for Char, please stop in to meet her!

Sorceress needs a home!

Are you ready to feel spellbound? This lively, sweet, and whimsical girl enjoys long walks and playing. She’s a 2-year-old Terrier mix, so she can sometimes be a bit talkative! (We love a dog with a big personality!) She's also got tons of energy for such a little girl! So she would love to go for runs with her new family, or play around in a fenced yard!

February is Adopt a Shelter Rabbit Month at Animal Friends!

February is Adopt a Rabbit month, and Animal Friends is hopping with special events to celebrate bunnies! Last year, nearly 60 of these interactive, adorable, often misunderstood companions were adopted, up from only 30 a few years ago. We’re committed to bunnies, and we’d like to help you get acquainted with these delightful animals and perhaps make a commitment to one (or more!) of your own.

February 19 will be a celebration of Bunnies and Snowflakes – no two are alike! Learn more about the unique personalities of the little hoppers, explore housing options and dietary needs and meet adoptable bunnies. Raffles, products and toy-making will round out the day.

When it comes to rabbits, we’re not just playing around. On February 26, our Toy-making Extravaganza will show you how to make some old favorites as well as the newest, no-fuss toys around. We’ll also have ready-made toys available for purchase.

And, you can come to Animal Friends on Leap Day (Wednesday, February 29), when we celebrate Adopt a Shelter Rabbit Month with $29 adoption specials for all of our little leapers! Adopt a rabbit or a bonded pair of rabbits for a $29 donation!

Celebrate ADOPT A SHELTER RABBIT month by volunteering!

One of the biggest things that first interested me about volunteering with the rabbits was the fact that I had not just one but two mentors when I started. I knew nothing about rabbits but as soon as I saw them at a bun run, I was in love. Everything else was a learning experience for me and without having mentors to guide me through it all I might not have stuck with the program. The rabbit mentors are knowledgeable and friendly and can help out with any questions you might have.

There is a lot to know about rabbits, about their behaviors, their care and even how to pick them up. The rabbit volunteer program that Animal Friends has in place now (it’s even more evolved than when I first started) is a great way to introduce volunteers to rabbits if they aren’t already familiar with them and for those who already know about rabbits, they can learn about rabbit handling specific to Animal Friends since shelter life for a bunny is different than being at home.

The rabbit volunteers have an important job of getting word out to the community about bunnies. For instance, how to handle basic care for a bunny, grooming, exercise needs, bunny proofing a home and many of the other things that people might not be aware of. And by volunteering at our bun runs, there are plenty of opportunities to address these things with people who have questions or who just might be interested in learning more about bunnies.

Rabbit volunteers have the option to do many things at Animal Friends. There is always a need for volunteers at our bun runs but we also do off-site activities where you can take a bunny to a place like PetSmart and talk to people about the bunnies at Animal Friends. Volunteers are also needed to write bunny bios, socialize the bunnies, foster bunnies, or groom them. There is something for everyone with bunny volunteering.

If you haven’t yet had a chance to see the rabbits in action, you should really check out one of the bun runs at Animal Friends. It’s such a joy to watch them run and play and see how much personality they have. It’s how they first got my attention (what personalities they have!) and I’ve enjoyed being a part of their lives (rabbits and people alike) since then. Animal Friends' Home-To-Home Adoption Program Presents... Two Adorable Calico Cats!

We have just recently found out that our 2-year-old little girl is allergic to our cats. It is heartbreaking to let go of our cats, but we know it’s what’s best for our little girl. Our cats are seven year old, calico cats. They are spayed, indoor cats who are always very nice to us and especially our children. They have just recently been to the veterinarian and are in good health with updated vaccines.

Brindy is a lovable, 21-month-old female Pitt Bull/Corgi mix who demonstrates the best characteristics of her breeds: highly athletic, affectionate, intelligent, playful, curious, and loyal. Brindy is spayed, housebroken and she loves children. She would make an excellent agility dog, and will soon be taking obedience classes and will be professionally evaluated for training as a Search and Rescue dog! Brindy is currently living with a foster family through Furry Angels Rescue. She is current on Vaccinations and Heartworm prevention. She likes dogs, but not cats, and would prefer a fenced yard.

These photos were taken at the Marietta, OH Humane Society Shelter, from where she was originally rescued. She'd been there from 4/11-6/11, kept in a small cage for 38 days, 22 hours a day, yet never lost her positive attitude. She does have an excellent temperament, as judged by professional dog trainer Sue Bac, of Sue Bac's Dog Training Academy, Gibsonia, PA.

Drizella needs a home!

Two-year-old Drizella is waiting for another chance.

A fluffy, lap full of love, Drizella will sing a song of contentment with a trilling purr. Dainty and sweet, her expressive tail ends in a little gray puff-ball, and her paws look like a proper lady's spotless white gloves. Even at play, she shows off her mannerly ways. She swats at a teaser toy with polite little taps... as if hoping not to offend the mouse.

Drizella does have a little secret...a weakness for treats. And, she doesn't seem to mind the company of other cats. A

nimal Friends saved her life during our New Years Eve Rescue but we can't save Drizella from a life that's lived in a cage. You must provide the ultimate happy ending for this angelic cat. Please come in to talk to an adoption counselor to see if your home would be her heaven on earth.

Zapper Finally Let His Guard Down! ...and Found a Forever Home

Zapper arrived at Animal Friends nearly two years ago, completely terrified. Rescued along with dozens of other cats from a hoarding situation, he hissed, swatted and threatened to bite when approached. While some shelters might have labeled him unadoptable, Animal Friends' staff and volunteers worked patiently with him, using food as a motivator to allow human contact.

Their efforts paid off in significant improvement in Zapper’s temperament, as he learned to relax and trust to an extent. In time, he was moved out of his condo and into one of our free-roam rooms, where he lived happily with other cats but remained wary of humans. When potential adopters came to visit, he scurried away and tried to hide. Not a good strategy for finding a forever home!

Last weekend, Zapper’s luck turned around. A kind young woman named Amy arrived at Animal Friends looking to adopt. She had a list of three long-term residents she wanted to visit, determined to provide a home to a cat most in need.

True to form, Zapper scooted out of the way when Amy entered the room, perched on top of a high armoire, looking down with a combination of curiosity and fear as Amy approached. An experienced cat owner with two other felines at home, she knew to move slowly and cautiously. After a short while, Zapper jumped down onto a cat tree and lay down next to another cat snoozing there. He allowed Amy to pet him, soon closing his eyes in contentment. Tears in her eyes, Amy nodded. Zapper was her cat.

This brave little fellow and compassionate young woman left Animal Friends to start a new life together, with feline siblings to keep him company. He is finally in a place where he will be loved, and the slot he has long occupied is empty, ready to be filled by another cat ready for a second chance.

A Happy New Year for Chester (and his mom!)

For Chester the cat and his new mom, Christmas came a few days late. At 11:00 on December 30, right at shelter opening, a woman appeared at Animal Friends’ door, cat carrier in hand.

Unaware of the scheduled New Year’s Eve rescue, she was a bit mystified by the commotion, but was nevertheless ready to adopt. Armed with a list of potential cats, she had studied the web site and identified several young orange tabby boys she thought might be good companions for a lonely kitty at home whose buddy recently passed away.

First on the list was Chester, a six month-old who was born on a porch to a stray mother. Chester found her lap within minutes of meeting her, then confidently crawled into her carrier and sat down as if announcing he was ready to go home. It was certainly mutual, as she quickly affirmed that yes, he was her cat, and she had no need to visit with the others.

His new mom told us that he was her Christmas gift from her daughter, who knew she wanted a cat and funded the adoption.

Although Christmas was late, little Chester rang in 2012 in his new home, where his cat-savvy mom had a quiet room all ready for him to relax in while he became accustomed to his new surroundings, which are undoubtedly filled with love. Happy new year, little guy!

Two Residents Became Best Friends -- and Found a Home Together!

Visitors to Animal Friends often stopped to see a touching scene: two residents of a free-roam room cuddled up together in a flower-shaped bed, sleeping intertwined, arms around one another. But there is quite a story behind the two cats.

Déjà Vu, with striking black and white markings, and smaller orange tabby Vancouver were rescued from two separate cat hoarding situations, where they lived in deplorable conditions. Happy with other cats, both had lacked human interaction and socialization.

Vancouver was at Animal Friends nearly two years, and Déjà Vu somewhat less. In that time, they became inseparable, grooming one another and cuddling in the cozy bed. While the two were content to be together, they remained skeptical of humans, and both were overlooked by potential adopters who could provide them a loving home - until last week.

A woman came to Animal Friends asking to visit with Vancouver after viewing her photo and profile on the web site. She spent two hours on the free roam floor, and observed firsthand the bond between Vancouver and her buddy. Patient and willing to make the commitment to move slowly, she decided to give Vancouver a home, and knew that she couldn’t possibly leave Déjà Vu behind. Soon both cats were on their way.

Any time a long-time resident finds a home, news spreads quickly among staff and volunteers. But this double happy ending, almost two years in the making, brought tears to many eyes. After a long wait, Vancouver and Déjà Vu have everything they could have wanted – a loving home and each other, forever.

Wizard the cat needs a home!

Wizard...a magical name for a seemingly ordinary black cat! But wait... he's a bob-tail...and not ordinary at all!

His rich, dense coat has an undercolor of sable brown, which can only be seen under bright lights. Take this calm and gentle boy out of his cage for a closer look. Rescued from a hoarder's neglect, Wizard was found in deplorable conditions. Yet, he did not let hardship stomp all the love out of him. He craves attention, and is affectionate and content in the company of both people and other cats.

Sadly, black cats are the least likely to find their forever homes. We here at Animal Friends find black cats both charming and lovable, and we are lucky when in their company.

61 Animals are Being Readied for New Homes!

TV cameras and newspaper reporters caught the action at Animal Friends’ annual New Year’s Eve Rescue, where this year 61 animals were saved from euthanasia at other facilities and brought to a new beginning at Animal Friends. But for these animals, their arrival was just the first step in their journey to new homes.

Despite the commotion, Animal Friends’ team of staff and volunteers functioned as a well-oiled machine. Upon arrival, each animal received a Disney-themed name, and was taken for an initial medical screening.

Dogs received a quick test to rule out the highly contagious parvo virus, then were taken to be evaluated by the medical team. Members of the Dog Behavior Team were standing by, ready to conduct behavioral tests that will determine what kind of family they will best fit into and what training will be needed.

Several of the dogs presented challenges for our volunteer groomers, as they arrived filthy and matted. Two adorable terrier mixes were a tangle of mats, a sweet Pomeranian seemed to dwindle to nothing when her poorly kept coat was removed, and a Shih Tsu mix was so heavily matted that she had to be shaved down to the skin.

Many of the animals arrived in need of spay and neuter surgeries, which will take place over the next several days, and medical treatment will be provided to those who need it.

The days following the Rescue have been hectic, with staff and volunteers relishing the satified exhaustion that comes from working toward a single-minded goal – helping 61 animals find their way home.

New Years Eve Rescue Saves 60 Pets' Lives!

Many of us have cried happy tears at the endings of Disney movies. Today, those fairy-tale stories came. true for 60 animals that were part of Animal Friends’ New Year’s Eve rescue. Each year, animals slated for euthanasia in animal control facilities and overburdened shelters are brought to Animal Friends to experience happy new beginnings.

Part of the Rescue’s tradition is the selection of a theme for the animals’ new names; fittingly, this year’s rescues were named after Disney characters. The first group was welcomed shortly after 9:30 a.m., with a happy Chocolate Lab leading the way; he was of course named Mickey, followed by a sweet but unkempt poodle who became Donald. The first young lady to arrive, a tan and white Pit Bull mix, was instantly dubbed Minnie.

In an atmosphere of well-controlled chaos, 20 cats and 40 dogs were greeted by staff and volunteers and taken to waiting cages, crates and kennels, where the medical staff began a thorough evaluation of each animal. The next few days will be busy, with behavioral evaluations, spay and neuter surgeries, and any needed medical attention administered before the newcomers reach the adoption floor.

Tonight, 60 animals that would have been euthanized will be sleeping in a warm bed, well-fed and already given a healthy dose of love. We’ll be posting more about our new residents and the first group will be ready for adoption on January 2. My name is Missy. I came to Animal Friends because my former owner had a total of 10 kittens in her home, and that was about 8 too many for her. I know she loved all of us, and it was hard to surrender some, but now I have a great chance to live in a home where I won’t have to compete so much for food and attention!

I am 3 years old and all white! I got along well with all my siblings, so if you already have another cat, or want to bring someone else home with me, that will be OK. Like a lot of other cats, I enjoy being in a high place and being able to look out a window. You have to admit, in the grand scheme of needs, mine are pretty simple to meet.

People are fine with me too, and I enjoy attention from them. I’ll sit on your lap, I’ll chirp to you, and I’ll even extend a paw to you when I’m really happy. So, a room with a perch and a view, a lap and some pats, and I’ll take care of the rest. See you soon, I hope!

Sophie, a Dalmatian mix, needs a home!

While Sophie may not have been riding on any fire trucks recently, she could catch a ride home in your car! Sophie the Dalmatian is a friendly, happy dog who is affectionate and very people oriented.

Sophie has put on a few pounds and we have been working very diligently to get her in shape again. We’d like to see her go to a home with an active family that will keep up her exercise program and help her lose the few extra pounds. The good part of this is that Sophie loves her walks and has very good leash manners. She does well meeting other dogs too!

She is okay with being handled and loves being the center of attention. Sophie isn’t quite sure how to play with toys yet, so if her new family could show her that would be wonderful! If you are on the lookout for a great walking partner, Sophie would be a great fit for you!

Animal Friends Exceeds Goal: 24,000 Spays in 3 Years, Totaling Nearly 100K Spays!

It was always in the backs of our minds.

We knew that while we were saving thousands of pets every year, the pet overpopulation crisis still raged on. Tens of thousands of pets would still be euthanized…simply because they had nowhere to go.

This is the sad reality that, perhaps, too many have come to accept. We, too, could maintain the status quo, always hoping to reverse the tide of unwanted animals…one pet at a time…through adoption alone.

Or, we could do much more. And if you know Animal Friends, you know that we are always thinking big.

Three years ago, Animal Friends made a promise. We pledged to dramatically expand our low-cost spay and neuter program.

We stated a goal: to spay and neuter 24,000 pets in just 3 years.

From 4,000 spays in 2008 to at least double that in 2009…how could it be done?

First, we ramped up a three-part program.

We underwrote surgeries at vets’ offices throughout the community, ensuring that low-income pet owners could visit a trusted local vet to have their pet altered.

We expanded our in-house clinics, bringing even more pets in our region to Animal Friends for high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter surgeries.

Then, we unveiled our secret weapon: a mobile spay/neuter clinic. Animal Friends’ Mobile Resource Center, a full-service operating room on wheels, empowered us to bring our services to the pets who would never otherwise be altered.

We spayed and neutered pets of low-income owners, pets at shelters with no spay/neuter programs, feral cats and pets in rural areas with no access to affordable surgeries. We offered special pricing for Pit Bulls, a kind of dog that is sadly overbred and suffers the worst fate in shelters.

We knew we couldn’t meet our goal alone. So we strengthened ties with partner organizations and even the City of Pittsburgh. We worked within communities to hold mass surgery days, sometimes altering more than 30 animals at a time.

By October, 2011, we had not only fulfilled our promise. We exceeded our goal! Animal Friends altered more than 24,000 pets in just three years!

That brings us to an even more astounding total. Since its inception in 1993, Animal Friends’ Low-Cost Spay/ Neuter Program has spayed or neutered nearly 100,000 pets!

While we’re proud of our achievement, we know there’s still much more work to be done. We still dream of a day when pets are no longer needlessly euthanized in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

So we will continue to bring affordable, high-quality surgeries to the pets in our region. And we’re prepared to step up our efforts even more. We’re gearing up to expand our programming yet again!

Animal Friends Will Hold 15th Annual New Year’s Eve Rescue to Save the Lives of Lost Pets

Over the past 14 years, Animal Friends’ annual New Years Eve Rescue has been a Pittsburgh tradition—and a last-chance lifeline for lost pets. This year, on Friday, December 30, Animal Friends will once again rescue lost pets who are slated to be euthanized by the years’ end.

On New Years Eve, Friends’ staff and volunteers will travel to local Animal Control facilities to bring back the unclaimed pets who would not otherwise live to see 2012. Then, each rescued pet will be welcomed with open arms at Animal Friends’ resource center, where they will be vaccinated, bathed, groomed, given a comprehensive medical and behavioral evaluation, and scheduled for a spay or neuter surgery.

Pending any necessary rehabilitation, the rescued pets will be available for adoption beginning Monday, January 2.

In the mean time, families are urged to come to Animal Friends to adopt this month, and empty our kennels in preparation for the rescue. Every empty cage represents another life that can be saved.

Rescues like this one are a shining example of why adopting from Animal Friends–all year round—is so critical. For every animal who finds a home through Animal Friends, there are others who desperately await a space and a second chance in our kennels. The rescue also casts a light on the staggering number of pets that are euthanized at animal control facilities every year, simply because they don’t have a license or a tag to lead them back to their families.

Most (un)Wanted: Poor Eponine Deserves a Chance

Tis the season for holiday miracles. And poor Eponine is dreaming that her own special miracle awaits!

This adorable, friendly cat came to us after being found as a stray with one surviving kitten. At only age two, she was discovered to be in the early stages of kidney failure, currently a stable condition which requires a special diet and fluids administered under her skin three times a week. Eponine cooperates with this, and Animal Friends will help, too, by providing the food at cost and training her new family on the fluid regimen, which is easy to learn.

Eponine doesn’t know she has a health problem, and certainly doesn’t show it. She’s a young, lively cat who loves attention and thrives on head scratches. She’s an avid bird-watcher and dust bunny chaser. She would love to be the only pet and soak up all the love!

This young lady is a staff and volunteer favorite, and she’s well-loved and cared for at Animal Friends. But there’s nothing like a home for the holidays, and Eponine certainly doesn’t deserve to live out her life in a shelter.

Finding just the right pet can be a daunting task when several species are involved. But as gorgeous long-haired kitty Charlene discovered, at Animal Friends it can work out just fine.

A couple with a cat and two dogs arrived at Animal Friends on Saturday looking for another feline, having recently lost a cat with multiple medical problems. Finding a kitty who could successfully live with cats, dogs, and met with the approval of their humans was the challenge at hand.

Starting with a list of cats that had previously passed dog tests, they looked at several, but didn’t find the right match. With closing time approaching, they were captivated by Charlene. An alert, curious cat dumped at a veterinarian’s office and shaved on her sides from matting, she was quickly gaining a reputation as a lap cat. They were charmed by their visit with her, but two big questions remained: how was she with dogs and other cats? With no history available and a short time at Animal Friends, nobody knew.

We agreed to conduct dog and cat tests with Charlene, and contact the couple with the outcome. Charlene met a cat-friendly canine resident, and after a quick hiss, was accepting and casual about the encounter. She was next introduced to an easygoing cat, and graciously accepted a quick sniffing. Within a few minutes, she was visiting cages, even climbing into an open door to stop in on its rather surprised resident.

While still on the road home, the couple received the call they had been hoping for – Charlene was indeed cat and dog-friendly, and ready to become a member of their furry family! As promised, they returned the next morning to take her home.

Wyvern and Windchime

Last Saturday, a young couple came to Animal Friends to adopt a new companion for their eight year-old cat, who was lonely after her buddy passed away. They had heard about our recent rescue of dozens of cats from a house in Carrick, and were especially interested in adopting from that group of cats who desperately need a second chance.

Fortunately, most of the cats from that rescue are cat-friendly, and they visited with several who warmed up to them almost instantly. But somehow, they didn’t feel they had found the right one.

Several cats later, and shortly before closing time, the young woman (with some help from a shelter volunteer) had talked her husband into considering two cats. They asked to visit with a pair of petite and gorgeous felines, Windchime and Wyvern, who had bonded while sharing a cage.

The couple was not deterred by a warning that the cats were quite shy and fearful. One of the cats was loaded in a carrier and taken to the get-acquainted room, but not before attempting a few scratches on the way. Even after calling in reinforcements, the second could not be caught and placed in a carrier, creating more scratches and soiling herself from fear.

The couple had fallen in love with the first cat, shy but willing to be held and petted, and they weren’t ready to give up. A brief visit to the cat condo where Windchime and Wyvern were housed convinced them that the two might be a project worth undertaking.

“We’re in this for the long haul, not just for a couple of weeks,” said the young man when told that it might take awhile for the two to settle into their home.

They pledged to come back in the morning, and true to their word, returned to adopt both cats, knowing full well they might have a challenging road in the beginning. Thanks to their patience and kind hearts, two cats who had a very rough start are now in their forever homes!

Eleven cats from this rescue are still waiting for a place of their own, all with “W” names: Wafer, Waggle, Wallflower, Wasabi, Weaver, Wei, Whirlybird, Whittle, Winsome, Wisteria and Wonka, ranging from nine months to eight years in age. We hope that’s not too much to ask – what do you think?

We like big mutts and we can not lie!

Recently seen on a t-shirt at Animal Friends: I like big mutts!

But for those of you who would prefer your mutts to be a bit smaller, we may have a surprise! Animal Friends has small dogs, too.

At 19 pounds, Maslow is delightfully furry, an appealing mix of miniature Schnauzer and poodle.

Visitors can also meet Martin (pictured above), an 18-pound Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix, who’s ready to find his forever home!

Sasha, weighing in at 17 pounds, is a mixture of cream cocker spaniel and Japanese Chin.

Buddy Boy, a 14-pound Chihuahua, came to us when his owner became ill, and would be a great companion for another dog.

The smallest and possibly neediest of these lightweights is 13-pound Primo, a black and tan Chihuahua/Miniature Pinscher mix, in need of patient humans who will help him adjust after a life of loneliness in a basement.

Hey, if you do happen to like big mutts, we have those, too – ranging up to 104-pound Parsha (above), a tan and black Rottweiler mix. At Animal Friends, we know that love can range from XS to XXL. Stop by and try on a new best friend for size!

Animal Friends' Home-To-Home Adoption Program Presents... Harley!

Harley is a 3-year old Golden Retriever/Australian Shepherd mix that I adopted 2.5 years ago. He weighs 50 pounds, is neutered, and up-to-date on all of his vaccinations. He’s incredibly smart and even more loving. He can be apprehensive to new people at first, but will warm to them after 5-10 minutes. After the 10-minute initial adjustment period he won’t want to leave your side! He’s good with kids and other dogs & loves to play fetch & go for runs. He needs to go to a home with a backyard (or other open area) that he can run & play fetch in.

I’m currently in the military & the constant moves, deployments, and various people dog-sitting him just isn’t fair. He deserves a life with more stability & I hope that one of you can provide him with that. He’s just an extremely intelligent, loyal dog that wants to be loved—he’ll show you more than enough affection in return!

Johnny's Stay at Animal Friends was Worth the Wait!

Older cats tend to wait in shelters while young cats and kittens more rapidly find homes. After some very hard times, striking, all-white Johnny’s luck turned, and he found he had a good supply of kitty karma going for him.

Johnny arrived at Animal Friends at age 13 when his owner surrendered him due to his chronic intestinal problems. After some testing, Animal Friends’ medical team discovered that the cause was the parasite coccidia, which is readily treatable with medication. This was Johnny’s first stroke of good luck.

His second lucky break came when a kind woman saw his photo online and was determined that he would not live out the rest of his life at a shelter. She inquired about adopting him, but was advised that he was still under medical treatment, and not yet ready for adoption. Johnny’s luck continued when a volunteer, a nurse, decided to foster him in her home while he finished receiving his medication. He did well, and with the help of a special diet designed to soothe his tummy, was soon able to return to Animal Friends.

As promised, his potential adopter, who had kept in touch regarding his progress, came in to adopt him the very day he moved into his cage on the adoption floor. She was beaming, delighted to finally meet the cat she had committed to upon first seeing him. Johnny’s biggest lucky break was celebrated by going home to live with a diehard animal lover, and several furry siblings.

Lee's adoption is priceless!

Poor Lee is grieving for his owner who passed away. His owner requested he come to Animal Friends when there was no one to care for him.

It's obvious that this beautiful, 5-year-old Tabby with clear green eyes was well loved. He's confident, friendly and enjoys affection without being overly needy. Although a mature cat, he still has a playful side. Lee wouldn't even mind sharing a home with other cats.

Lee lost his best friend and his home. Please come in to see him. Meet with one of adoption counselors to see if he's right for you. Loneliness shared often becomes love. Lee has lots of love to give you.

Barkley, a red Bloodhound mix, deserves a second chance.

Barkley is gentle and affectionate red Bloodhound mix who loves everyone he meets! He enjoys the company of other dogs like himself who are calm and relaxed. He appears to be house- and crate-trained and enjoys riding in the car. He takes treats softly and is happiest when being shown affection. He enjoys taking slow walks with our volunteers while sniffing to his heart’s content.

This gentleman hasn't had much luck in his 8 years. He was found as a stray without any identification and brought to Animal Friends by the Dog Warden. Upon his arrival, we found that Barkley is visually impaired and truly deserves to find a safe and caring home to call his own.

A fenced yard is recommended for Barkley. Due to his impairment, it is important to keep him contained and safe while allowing him the enjoyment of spending time outdoors. He would also prefer to go to a home with carpeted stairs, as he is prone to slipping.

Barkley hopes to find a special family who will show him love and compassion and with whom he can share his golden years. If you think you have room in your heart and home for our sweet Barkley, stop by soon.

From November 25 - December 31, Animal Friends will waive our donation request when you adopt a pet age 2 or older.

Animal Friends knows that adopters have many choices when they look for a new pet. We firmly believe that families should choose pets that are altered and vaccinated. We believe in our adoption process. And most importantly, we believe that our shelter animals deserve to find loving homes. Lilly, an Aretha Franklin wannabe, just wants a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T. This 3-year-old white and agouti Mini Lop is a strong-willed bunny set in her ways – a bit of a spitfire.

She can sometimes be a loner – which is often the sign of a deep thinker. She’s not your average bunny, but if she likes you, the passion will flow. Once she decides that you’re okay, you can hug and cuddle her and she’ll relax in your arms.

Sunny needs a home!

We’d like you to meet, Sunny, a bright, beautiful golden Lab who surely has more sunny days ahead of her.

Sunny is 8 years old. She was very frightened when she came to Animal Friends, but she has done very well with her training and has really warmed up to the shelter staff. Our volunteers have been working closely her Sunny to help her get used to being handled.

Now, Sunny enjoys long walks at the park, riding in the car and playing with her toys. She is quiet and mannerly and walks nicely on a leash and harness. She knows basic commands like sit, down and give paw.

Sunny loves to seek attention from the staff, and she is a leaner, always leaning against the people she trusts! We would like Sunny’s new parents to continue her training and keep working with her, so an experienced dog owner would be best. Sunny is a little frightened of children and she needs gentle care and a quiet home in which to thrive.

Black Tie & Tails: Real Housepets of Pittsburgh was a Success!

Last Saturday, Animal Friends' supporters, staff, volunteers and residents turned into real party animals at the annual Black Tie & Tails gala! It’s a night of fun, glamour, and an opportunity to help Animal Friends continue its work on behalf of homeless, unwanted and abused animals.

Where else can you bid on an opportunity to sit in on Jim Krenn’s DVE morning radio show, or win a Steelers party for 25 at the Nevillewood home of Steelers legend Andy Russell? Watch out for three Eyetique ads featuring families (and their pets) whose winning bids will support Animal Friends’ work. And numerous silent auction items, from art to jewelry to autographed footballs and jerseys helped make the evening a success.

For the past several years, the live auction finale has been an opportunity to support Animal Friends’ lifesaving spay and neuter initiative. This year, CEO David Swisher announced that Animal Friends met and exceeded their goal to alter 24,000 pets in three years! A key component was our mobile clinic, which empowered Animal Friends to take our services into rural and underserved areas, offering low-cost services to those with limited means, and altering feral cats to put a halt to unwanted births.

Animal Friends Waives Cat Adoption Donations in Emergency Adoption Effort

Animal Friends is overwhelmed with homeless cats. We're determined to do something about it.

Recent large-scale rescues have left our shelter desperate for kennel space. Now, in an effort to find loving homes for cats and to empty cages for incoming rescued cats, Animal Friends is waiving adoption donations for all felines age 2 and up.

Cat adoption is truly priceless!

In June, police officers called Animal Friends to a home in Carrick, where 64 cats and kittens were found living in garbage, feces and filth. Though the home was condemned and boarded up, rescue workers donned Hazmat suits and entered day and night, pulling flea- and scab-covered cats from every nook and cranny. Just one month later, a neighboring house was found to have another out-of-control cat population. Again, Animal Friends was called to the rescue. While the cats are now healthy and ready for adoption, many still wait in cages.

Last week, police officers took Animal Friends to a home in Garfield, where nearly 70 more cats and kittens were rescued from deplorable conditions.

Meanwhile, calls continue to come in about strays and unwanted litters.

Animal Friends must place their feline residents into loving homes, so that even more can have a chance.

Animal Friends typically requests a $75 donation for cat adoption. In an effort to find loving homes for cats, Animal Friends is now waiving the requested donation for all cats age 2 and up.

All cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and medically and behaviorally cleared for adoption.

All adoption applications are thoroughly screened to ensure appropriate, loving and lifelong adoptions.

Bowie's Story

Some things were just meant to be.

Recently, a family whose cat had passed away came to Animal Friends, ready to open their home to another feline. They quickly zeroed in on the one they wanted to visit, and when the fluffy kitty was brought into a get-acquainted room, the bonding was nearly instant. The contented cat claimed a lap, the family fell in love, and soon they were on their way home together.

The adoption story of Bowie, the fluffy white cat, sounds fairly routine - except that the family’s previous pet was a white cat named Mr. Bowie. As soon as they saw our Bowie, they knew that was the cat for them.

The moral of the story? When you open your heart, you never know what you may find. Good karma happens daily at Animal Friends. Come visit us, and find yours!

Animal Friends' Home-To-Home Adoption Program Presents... ZeeKee!

ZeeKee is a very active, affectionate cat who I rescued as a stray in August 2011. He will lay purring on your lap as he plays with the strings of your hoodie or he will let you hold him as he discovers what fun your necklace has to offer. Make these "toys" obsolete and he loves to just be petted. He will affectionately rub his face on your chin or nose as you hold him. He loves toys that he can bat around as well as string and kitty teasers. His favorite toys are little stuffed mice with catnip in them. He will be a very loyal pet - he will follow you around the house to be near to you and will probably want to sleep in your bed. He is vocal, especially when you first come home from work and he has missed you. He is almost two-years-old, is up-to-date on his shots, neutered and has tested negative for feline leukemia and FIV.

Will you open your home and heart to this little love bug? ZeeKee would do best in a one-pet home and has never been around small children, so maybe a home with older children or just adults.

Lovable Labradoodle needs a home! Her name is Jasmine and she has beautiful black, wavy hair. She has papers and she is 6-years-old. Jasmine is spayed and house-broken.

She can sit, stay, lie down, fetch, drop the ball in your hand, and knows the hand signals to the first three commands. She is very graceful and delicate in the house and around children. She likes other dogs. She is very loving and loves a good pet. She likes to chase the ball and bring it back to you. She enjoys playing basketball and chewing on rawhides. Jasmine learned to ring a bell to let us know she needed to go outside.

She is very intelligent and learns well with positive encouragement. She loves to please so by ignorning unwanted behavior and praising the good behavior, she learns very quickly. She is easy to groom: just bathe and trim hair with scissors. Occassionally, we pay to have her groomed so her undercoat can be thinned. She does shed and this is a problem with our second child who has some respiratory issues, which is why we need to find a new home for her.

Keep your pet safe this Halloween!

Between ringing doorbells, scary disguises and easy access to candy, Halloween can be a scary and dangerous time for pets. Animal Friends offers tips to keep pets safe and healthy during the Halloween season:

During the trick-or-treat hours, safely confine your companion animal in a room of your house away from the front door. The constant opening of the door provides easy opportunities for a quick escapes outside. Be sure your pet’s identification tags and microchip are up-to-date just in case she ever does escape and become lost.

Keep all candy and wrappers out of your pet’s reach. Chocolate and sweeteners like xylitol are poisonous to pets. Some pets like to tear open crinkly wrappers and may ingest foil or paper as a result. If your companion animal does eat a significant amount of candy, call your veterinarian immediately or contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1.888.426.4435.

Understand that costumes can be quite scary to your pet. Pets are often suspicious of new things—which is an important instinct that helped their ancestors survive. Never tease or try to scare a pet while you’re in costume, because even a friendly pet may feel threatened by and scratch or bite.

Keep jack-o-lanterns and other flammable décor safely out of your pet’s reach.

Black cats are not evil nor do they hold any special powers, but at this time of year they can fall victim to pranks and cruelty. It is always safer for cats to be kept indoors. However, if your cat does go outside, be sure to keep him in the house several days before and after Halloween, especially if he is a black cat.

In a continued effort to end pet overpopulation and unnecessary euthanasia, Animal Friends is offering a $5 special on cat neuter surgeries throughout December.

Appointments are required, and spaces are limited. Pet owners must apply for an appointment by clicking here. Cats will be neutered and vaccinated against rabies for $5. Other services are available for an additional charge. Surgeries will take place at Animal Friends on Camp Horne Road in the North Hills.

A neuter surgery is performed on a male cat to prevent him from breeding and producing litters of kittens. The surgery is performed by an experienced, licensed veterinarian while the cat is under anesthesia. In addition to preventing the births of unwanted litters, neutering:

reduces a pet’s risk of cancer and infection, such as prostate and testicular cancers

eliminates the mating drive, making pets more relaxed companions

makes pets less likely to run away

helps curb unwanted behaviors such as urine marking territories, roaming, fighting and howling

Spaying and neutering is also critical to ending pet overpopulation. Over 20,000 unwanted pets are euthanized every year in Allegheny County alone. A single neuter surgery can save 55 unwanted animals from being born. The only proactive way to reduce and eliminate pet overpopulation is through spay and neuter.

It’s a fiesta! Animal Friends is celebrating November, National Adopt a Senior Pet Month, with priceless pet adoptions for seniors and senior-itas!

Animal Friends is waiving adoption donations for all pets age 5 and up, Monday-Friday, November 1-30.

Animal Friends typically requests a $75 donation for dogs and cats and $60 for rabbits. But this November, we’re throwing a party for the grown-ups and offering priceless adoptions. It’s time to celebrate the adult animals and their fabulous qualities:

Mature pets are more likely to be housebroken and less likely to chew.

Adult pets are less demanding than puppies and kittens, and are better at letting you sleep through the night.

What you see is what you get! Adopting an adult pet takes the guesswork out of predicting a pet’s size, personality and energy level.

Adult pets can have great experience! Animal Friends can match you with a pet who has lived with kids, working parents or other pets.

Adult pets are the most grateful, appreciative companions.

Our Challenge: Animal Admissions vs. the Crisis of Pet Overpopulation

On any given day, it’s the biggest challenge we face.

But we do see it, each and every day…when someone needs to surrender a pet, and they can not wait.

When it comes to the heartbreaking situation of surrendering a pet to a shelter, everyone wants the same thing: a promise that the animal will receive a second chance. And since residents can live at Animal Friends for as long as it takes to find them a new home, pet owners rest a bit easier when they leave an animal in our care.

So, we at Animals Friends work tirelessly to place our animals into homes. We know that it’s a matter of life and death: every emptied cage empowers us to offer a lifeline to another pet in need.

But the sad reality is: our resources are not infinite. And the crisis of pet overpopulation is so much bigger than any one shelter. More than 20,000 homeless pets are euthanized every single year in this very community. Most of those pets are healthy, lovable animals who simply had nowhere to turn.

That’s why we’re doing everything we possibly can. Nearly 20 years ago, Animal Friends launched a low-cost spay/neuter program to help prevent the births of unwanted pets. Five years ago, we built a bigger facility that would shelter more homeless animals. Three years ago, we put a mobile spay/neuter clinic on the road to double our efforts. Today, every cage and foster home was already filled…when our Humane Officer hit the road to bring in more pets in need of immediate rescue.

And don’t forget kitten season! That’s the time of year when our phones start ringing off the hook, with calls from neighbors who have found entire litters in their yards. It’s simply overwhelming.

Doing everything we can means that Animal Friends is constantly operating at maximum capacity. So, when someone needs to surrender a pet to Animal Friends, so often, we need to ask them to wait.

Of course we dream of a day when there can be a safe place, and ultimately a home, for every abandoned animal. But while we work towards that goal, we…and the pets in our region…need your help.

How you can make an impact:

Adopt one, save two. Adopt a pet from Animal Friends so that another pet in need will have somewhere to go.

Spay or neuter your pet. Even if you find homes for your pet’s litter, there are other pets, waiting in shelters, who won’t be so lucky.

Sponsor a spay. Underwrite a surgery for a pet who otherwise would not be altered. Visit www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org to make your donation.

If you must surrender a pet:

Plan ahead. Pittsburgh has three shelters and many rescue groups who can assist you when you must give up your pet. Not all shelters can guarantee that your pet will be adopted. If you would like to surrender a pet to Animal Friends, understand that your admissions application will be placed on file and processed as we find homes for previously admitted animals.

If you find a stray pet:

Call your local animal control agency. Animal control agencies will pick up dogs and sometimes cats. But, they are not adoption agencies. Sometimes, good Samaritans find that they are able to safely care for a stray pet while they seek his or her original owner, a new home, or admit the pet to a shelter. I’m Franny, and I am a 4-year-old short-haired Tabby cat.

I came to Animal Friends because my owner had too many cats to care for. I am on the shy side, so please do not waste your breath trying to call me. However, I thoroughly enjoy being petted and will reward you with massive purrs in return for the affection.

I love to play with toys and can amuse myself for quite a while doing so. My foster family says that if I’m upstairs and you are downstairs, you will hear me running across the floor as I bat a small ball or toy mouse. I also enjoy climbing up a cat tree and relaxing on the very top.

At other times I’ll amuse myself by just looking out a convenient window and watching as the world goes by. So if you are looking for a cat who is affectionate but independent, I’m your gal.

Unfortunately my self-reliance does not extend to the adoption process, so you are the one who has to fill out the application and talk with the adoption counselor. Now would be good!

Animal Friends' Home-To-Home Adoption Program Presents... Maple!

Maple is a sweet 4 year old purebred, spayed American Chocolate Lab. She thrives on regular exercise and attention. She weighs 78 pounds and is quite tall for a Lab but very fit.

Maple is looking for a home that can give her about 30 minutes of walking or running a day, plus plenty of play time. She heels well and is a great running partner. She is dog-friendly and loves the dog park. She loves kids and currently lives in a house with a baby. She is not
food aggressive, is fully house and crate trained, and knows her basic commands.

Maple would do best in a house that has kids or adults that can give her a lot of attention. She is currently not allowed on the furniture but would love to sleep in your bed if you let her. Owners that work part time or at home would be ideal for her.

She has an allergy to wheat and corn (so her food costs a little more but is available at Petco, Petsmart and Feed stores), but other than that is quite healthy.

She would come with crate, beds, toys, and other necessary items. A trial period of 2 weeks is recommended.

Marvin is a 13-month-old male Tabby with a big bushy tail. I got Marvin from a farm in Ligonier when he was six weeks old.

He has been neutered, feline leukemia tested and vaccinated. He is house broken and uses only one litter box. He likes Purina Cat chow and eats half a can of wet food twice a week.

He is friendly and playful. He is good with children. He greets you at the door and follows you around the house. He likes his belly rubbed when I get home. He will lay on the floor in front of you when he wants this done. He is a great cat with a good personality. I would like to keep him but am unable to do so. Johnny is quite a lover boy around Animal Friends. Graceful, gentle and sweet, this beautiful white cat with soulful blue eyes will lavish you with attention.

Mature cats make wonderful companions, as they have put those rambunctious behaviors of their youth behind them. Very content with lounging around, and accepting of cuddling and grooming, 13-year-old Johnny will provide a sense of comfort to your life. He's alert, curious and playful, and Johnny will even join you in a game of "hot potato." He will bat around his toy mouse on a cat-teaser toy, then quickly remove his paw as if not quite knowing what that mouse will do in return. It's a delightful game to share with him.

Happy Tail Adoption Story: Fiona Espy

I can only write this because cats can’t read. You see, I tell my four felines that I love them all the same, but like many parents, I have a confession to make: there’s a special place in my heart for one of them – my Fiona.

Three years ago, Fiona was living in an unsheltered cage in a back yard. The yard belonged to a woman who may have thought she was being kind by capturing and feeding stray cats. When the woman passed away, Animal Friends’ humane officers discovered a dozen cats in cages, many loaded with fleas and lice. All of the cats were confiscated and underwent medical evaluation and treatment before being cleared and placed on Animal Friends’ adoption floor.

As a volunteer at Animal Friends, I have the privilege of meeting and befriending many felines as they pass through on their way to loving homes. Having recently lost a 17-year old cat, there was a vacancy in our home to be filled with just the right one. As I arrived for an evening of cat-petting, I was drawn to a blue cream Tortie with gorgeous green eyes. Thus began my love for Fiona. Fiona and I chatted several times, and her eagerness to be petted and loved won me over. Soon, she was on her way home with me.

he first few days were challenging, as Fiona struggled to adjust. Initially fearful, she scratched at a bathroom throw rug and mistook it for a litter box at night. I began scooping her up and carrying her to the basement to visit the box at bedtime, and put a water dish in the spot she was misusing, hoping she would not want to befoul a watering hole. She soon cleaned up her act, and has since been a model citizen.

Fiona is our “Velcro cat” – it’s sometimes necessary to peel her off in order to move around, although a lapful of Fiona is a wonderful excuse not to get up. She lives for love, with a firm and convincing head butt to the chin as a reminder. I have rarely witnessed the total bliss she exhibits during a chin scratch or ear rub, closing her eyes and positioning herself for more, more, more, more. As she’s curled up, safe and warm, it breaks my heart to think of her confined to an outdoor cage all alone, braving the elements. She seems so grateful for a loving home, and I’m grateful that we can provide her with the warmth and security she deserves.

In the evening, she’s careful to give equal time to both my husband and me, visiting one of us and then the other as we relax in front of the TV. Even at night she makes her presence known, lying on the back or tummy of one of her sleeping humans, or jumping on the bed, then walking across one of us to spend time with the other. My grown daughter adores and has threatened to steal Fiona. Her lease, which prohibits pets, provides me with some comfort, but I still listen for meows when my daughter packs her car to return home. I’ve assured her that when she can have pets, I’ll help her find a kitty of her own, but we both know there’s only one Fiona.

Although she specializes in love, my Fiona is far from one-dimensional. She can often be seen chasing furiously through the house with one or more of her feline siblings in mad pursuit of…something or other. She holds her own in the nightly feather toy games my husband hosts, and is delighted when I wear dangly earrings that invite a paw swipe or two.

Fiona and I make an ideal pair, both enjoying a cuddle as she lets me know that I am a very special cat mommy indeed. As she flops down, head butts and looks up at me with those imploring green eyes, I understand what she’s saying: “Love me! Love me!” Happily, with yet another chin scratch underway, I know just how to tell her: “I do, Fiona. I really, really do.”

Animal Friends Offers Free Straw for Cold Outdoor Pets

In preparation for plummeting temperatures, Animal Friends is once again offering free bags of straw to anyone who cares for outdoor pets or feral cats.

Animal Friends urges pet owners to make their pets part of the family and keep them inside the home. Dogs, cats and domestic rabbits are social animals, and just like humans, they suffer without interaction and companionship. Animal Friends offers many programs, including low cost spay/neuter and behavior training, that may help overcome issues that sometimes prompt a pet owner’s decision to house a pet outside. Call 412.847.7000 to learn more about these options.

However, recognizing the reality that many pets do live outside, Animal Friends urges those pet owners to obey the law by ensuring that outdoor pets have access to proper food and warm, dry shelters. Because blankets, towels and pillows will only get wet and freeze, straw is the best insulation against the cold and wet winter. Free bags of straw can be picked up at Animal Friends, located at 562 Camp Horne Road in the North Hills, just 0.5 miles west of Exit 8 off I-279. Straw delivery is also available for those without transportation or are unable to pick up the straw from Animal Friends.

A car mat or rug should be used as a flap over a doghouse door to keep the inside free of wind, snow and rain. If you are in need of a dog house, please contact Animal Friends to inquire about availability.

Extra care must also be taken to provide drinkable water and extra food at all times during freezing temperatures.

Frequently check your pet's paws, ears and tail for signs of frostbite, a very common occurrence. If you suspect frostbite, your pet will need to see a veterinarian immediately. Check your dog's chain often to make sure it is not frozen to the ground or tangled. A tangled, too-short chain can cost your pet his or her life in bad weather.

Alexandria the Lab needs a home!

This gorgeous, very smart black Lab is currently living in a foster home. She is 2 years old and has her basic skills down pat - she’s housebroken and crate trained. But her talents extend farther. She can squat and give you five on command. Very cool.

But what would you expect from such a sleek looking pooch? Now Alexandria does have her needs, like she wants to be an only dog and she’s not too keen on cats. But she LOVES people, especially to snuggle with.

Charity and Candy, a mother/daughter duo, are Beagles who have been waiting to love someone for too long. They quickly proved to be sweet and gentle enough to join our classroom programs and attend all our events, but they’ve been homeless for most of this year.

Zeke & Ani are two lovable, 9 year-old dogs of mixed origin. I adopted them 9 years ago from the same litter - they are brother and sister and have never spent a day apart! Unfortunately, due to a change in family circumstances, I am no longer able to care for them and am looking for a new home for them both. They are both around 40 pounds and are very calm, mellow and sensitive around people. They do not jump, rarely bark, and they know how to sit on command. Zeke doesn't like other animals (except his sister), so they would not do well with other pets. The ideal adopters would be either young or old, a couple or an individual, with a yard preferably as they love to be outside. They are house-trained (they can be left the entire work day inside if need be), enjoy going on walks and have a lot of love to give!

Katie is an elegant domestic shorthaired tabby who was rescued from the 2005 Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Believed to be about six years old, she has lived in a loving Pittsburgh home until recently when her owners had to move and could not take katie with them. She is quite a docile and happy little girl who enjoys playing with feather toys and lazer lights as well as quietly sleeping in sunny patches or cozy beds. She eats only dry cat food and is quite healthy and beautiful. She's spayed and up to date on her shots. Katie is an indoor cat and is litter trained.

Poor Fuzzy has had it rough. This stray kitten was living outside and was completely covered with fleas. Fuzzy is a social guy and was very lonely, so he went from house to house, looking for someone who would take him in.

Finally, a kind person took him to the hospital, where the vets got rid of all his fleas, then neutered him, vaccinated him, and tested him for FeLuk and FIV. Once he was deemed completely healthy, Fuzzy went home to live with his rescuer.

She found him to be a wonderful, charming and social cat. He likes to follow her everywhere, cuddle with her, and sleep with her at night. She and Fuzzy hit it off immediately, but there was one problem. Her other cats.

Fuzzy, who probably had some scary experiences with other strays before he was rescued, does not like living with other cats. Right now, he is kept in a single room where he can safely live without the company of other felines.

If you want a good old all-American mutt, go to an animal shelter. That’s the word on the street, and it’s certainly true. Shelters are overflowing with mixed-breed animals who will give a lifetime of love. What’s less well known, and equally true, is that shelters are also great places to meet purebreds.

Potential adopters who grew up with, fell in love with, or have their hearts set on a specific breed may automatically head for the breeder or the pet store. While some may be reputable and offer adorable animals, producing any animal for sale adds to overpopulation when so many homeless animals wait in shelters.

At Animal Friends, our numbers may surprise you. In 2010, 395 purebred animals were available for adoption. Some of these animals were surrendered to us when their owners were no longer able to care for them; sometimes, purebreds are picked up as strays or confiscated from situations of cruelty or neglect. They are all ages, from youngsters to seniors, and all need homes.

During 2010, 386 purebred dogs passed through the shelter, along with nine cats, eight Siamese and one Himalayan. Beagles and Labs topped the list, but Animal Friends also housed 31 Chihuahuas (both long and short-haired), 21 Bichon Frises, 16 Dachshunds, 13 Yorkshire Terriers and nine Shih Tzus. Big dog, too! Last year, Animal Friends was home to 28 German Shepherds, 12 Siberian Huskies, five Saint Bernards, three Rottweilers and a couple Mastiffs and Newfoundlands.

Purebred animals are typically placed quickly, so potential adopters need to act fast when an animal hits the adoption floor. There are several ways Animal Friends can help with the search. Visit the dog, cat and rabbit pages of www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org to follow a link to register your breed interest, from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier and everything in between. An e-mail will be automatically generated when a dog of that breed becomes available.
Check our website regularly, too, as the animal pages are updated every hour. Finally, visitors are always welcome to meet our adoptable animals, who come in all shapes, sizes and personalities. Often, a visit to the shelter to meet a specific dog results in an instant connection with another one altogether – one that just happens to result in pure love.

Bobsy the Beagle needs a home!

Bobsy is an amazing little dog.

This sweet Beagle ended up homeless when both of his owners passed away. We know that he has received a lot of love in his short life because he is confident, sweet and very cuddly.

We recently took Bobsy to appear on a live TV spot. This is the sort of thing that makes a lot of dogs very nervous, but not Bobsy. First, he hopped right into a crate in the car, and calmly watched the word go by on his way into town. Once he arrived at the TV station, he walked around and happily greeted everyone there. After he made friends, he settled into our staff person’s lap for a nap. He was rested and refreshed when it was time to go on the air, where he settled onto the stage and waited for his big debut.

Bobsy is housebroken and likes people and other dogs. He limps a little on his back leg, which means he’d rather cuddle than roughhouse or run around. This friendly boy is eager-to-please and ready to love someone, and doesn’t deserve to spend another day in a kennel.

She She is a beautiful, loving, spayed, black mixed breed that we adopted from the Rescue League about 7 years ago She was about 1 year old then, so we’re guessing she is about 8 years old now. And I also found that her name means “thank you” in Chinese (it is pronounced “shay shay” in Chinese). She came with the name when we adopted her and we never changed it.

She just had her annual exam and vaccinations at VCA Duncan Manor Animal Hospital in Allison Park. The vet said she is very healthy and is in excellent shape for a dog her age. She weighs about 59 lbs. and is medium-to-large sized. She loves going to the vet – go figure! And, they love her. She never gives them a hard time for any of the exams. She also loves going to the groomers, where they also love her. She is just a very good-natured, trusting dog.

She is very well-mannered and has never had an accident in the house. She is very affectionate and loves being around people and is easily trained. She is good with cats and other small pets – just tell her to “be nice” and she will hold herself in check. I have a cat who was introduced to the dog when it was just a kitten. Five years later, this cat just torments the poor dog all of the time and the dog never turns on him. However, she can be aggressive with other dogs. I walk her with a Gentle Leader and control her well with that should we encounter other dogs on our walks.

When I had a house with a yard, I used to tether her outside and she loved just lying in the sun in the summer. Her black head even turned a bit bronze. And she loves the winters even more. Whenever there was snow on the ground, she would put her nose down into it and just burrow around like that. She loved chasing and catching snow balls that I would throw. You could see her laughing after she would catch one in her mouth and it would explode.

This is a dog that you can see smile when she is happy. I am moving and cannot take her with me and am looking for a good home to adopt her. I will miss her very much.

Hi! My name is Piper. My dear friend Laurie, who gave me such a beautiful name, suddenly passed away almost two months ago leaving myself and several of my feline friends looking for new homes.

I would say that I am an outgoing, personable kitty who loves to be with people and as you can see from my picture, I certainly am not camera shy! I have this habit of rubbing against people's legs looking for affection and attention. My favorite pastime is working in the garden with a human companion. Laurie would fiddle around in the backyard and I would just hang out with her enjoying the sunshine! I am also cool with living the good life indoors too. I have no issues using my litter box and since I've been around other cats my whole life, I would adjust to a household with other felines easily. So I guess you can say all in all I'm an easy going kitty.

At age 9, I'm not young but I'm not over the hill either and at times I like to play like a kitten. We really miss Laurie but good friends of hers have stepped in to care of us. Unfortunately, time is running out for us at Laurie's apartment so myself and my other feline friends need to find new digs soon.

I was recently at the vet's office where I received a clean bill of health and a microchip. All I need now is someone to open their home and heart to me.

Yes it had peeling paint, the brakes were a bit wonky and the gas needed to be applied just so or it would stall out, but it was my car. And it wasn’t just any car, it was my first car.

It was the 1996 Dodge Neon with the awful white hubcaps and the smiling grill that I bought used in 2002 with my own money from my first “real” job after graduation. It served me well, shuttling me back and forth to work and chauffeuring me on the occasional road trip. It was a good car, and the fact that I had it for so long was a symbol of pride for me, a testament to my near death-defying frugality. When teased for having such an unhip ride, I joked that I was hoping to keep the car until its 16th birthday, where I thought it would start to drive itself. In the nearly 10 years that we were together, my car only broke down once. Yes, parts would fall off, but it would still run, always eager to please.

But recently, I knew that it was Time. After spending a few lonely months in my driveway, undriven, tires sagging, wheel wells home only to spiders, my car needed to find a new home. But where? Yes, I could push-pull-tow it to a dealer coming away unsatisfied with maybe $100, feeling that I’d somehow betrayed my little friend.

No, my car was better than that. It deserved more.

Through volunteering at Animal Friends I learned of their car donation program, carried out in a partnership with Goodwill. This was perfect! Goodwill would auction off my car at one of their twice-monthly auctions in Westmoreland County, with the majority of proceeds given to Animal Friends. To donate the car, all I needed to do was complete a form and send it to the Development Coordinator at Animal Friends. Goodwill would then call me to arrange a free tow and title transfer. After finding out how easy it was to donate, I eagerly filled out the paperwork and in less than two weeks I had a pick-up date for my car.

Today was the pick-up day. As my car rumbled away on the Goodwill flatbed, I cried a little. I’ll admit it. But I was comforted in knowing that the auction proceeds would be making a difference, helping Animal Friends give deserving animals a second chance and advancing the organization’s mission of ensuring the well being of companion animals. And who knows, maybe it could even mean a second chance for my first car.

Rabbits are gaining popularity as pets, coming in only fourth to cats, dogs and birds. With this newfound popularity, rabbits have become a newly welcomed addition to families all over the United States. Rabbits, like any other species of animal, can be misunderstood, and that can lead to bunnies being abandoned--or worse. This can be avoided just by knowing some very basic but essential facts about rabbit care, habitat, diet and health.

First and most importantly, be sure everyone in your home is prepared for the new arrival, even Fido or Mittens. Pet ownership and rabbits in particular require a lot of responsibility and even financial commitment. For instance, a rabbit needs a large cage or pen to live and play in. They also need hay, pellets, water, fresh greens, toys, bedding and a place for potty breaks. Also remember to factor in the costs of medical care throughout the rabbit’s life, grooming, and other expenses.

If you are ready to start looking for your new long-eared friend, you may consider adopting from a shelter like Animal Friends. Adopting from a shelter is such a rewarding experience for you because you helped save a rabbit who needed a second chance, and are freeing a space so the shelter will be able to save more bunnies.

Do you research and learn about different kinds of rabbits. Rabbits come in many different shapes, sizes, colors and temperaments, and choosing the one right for you can make all the difference!

The next thing you need to know is how to make your new bunny feel right at home. Having a comfortable cage equipped with hay (as much as the bunny's body size is usually recommended) for eating and sleeping in, water, and maybe a cardboard or wooden toy to make your rabbit feel snug.

Playtime for your furry friend is very important for its physical and emotional health. Playtime regiments are suggested as 3 – 4 hours daily. Most bunnies have no problem romping by themselves, but some playtime with you can make your bunny feel more loved and when your bunny feels loved, he will love you back!

In conclusion, owning a rabbit can be a lot of work but with proper care and knowledge your bunny is on the track to being happy and healthy. Your bunny can be a best friend, companion and a constant source of love.

Nelly is a 2-year-old Pomeranian/Spaniel mix. He has a ton of energy, and is a very happy dog. He enjoys chewing and digging and really needs a lot of space to run and play. He loves to sit in the sun, and follow his owner wherever they go! He loves sleeping in his doggie bed at night on his back with his legs all stretched out. He's afraid of thunder, and he will hide under the bed!

He gets along with other dogs, but is protective of his toys and bones. He gets along with cats too. He is not sure how to react to children when they are very loud. He's not sure if he is getting yelled at or if they are just playing with him. Due to this, he does need to get used to children a bit more, but should not be a problem.

He gets very excited to meet new people, usually resulting in a jump and a kiss! He has not had any accidents in the house since he was neutered.

Rex is a 1 and 1/2 year-old mixed breed that we adopted last year, and he has turned out to be a very sweet and loving dog who always wants to be by your side. Rex loves to play with our chocolate lab, as well as other dogs in the neighborhood.

Rex is always kind to other animals, children, and adults. Unfortunately, Rex suffers from separation anxiety and is also extremely afraid of storms. Rex needs a good home where someone will be around to play with him and pay special attention to him. Rex will return the attention he receives with much love and loyalty. He truly is a very loving dog!

We both work full time and often have to travel for our careers, so we are unable to provide Rex with the care and love he deserves. Additionally, we are expecting a baby in the fall and will have even less time to devote to our needy yet lovable friend.

Rex recently started taking medicine to help him with his anxiety, and it seems to be slowly helping the poor boy out. With continued support and love, we feel that Rex will offer years of love and companionship to a lucky family. We are hoping to find Rex a loving family that will love him as much as we do.

She enjoys meeting new people and other dogs and gets along well with everyone. Her bad habits are that she jumps up to greet people (though not in a violent way at all - she only wants to say hello) and she sometimes likes to scrounge for snacks on the floor or kitchen counter, sometimes choosing to eat paper. Her good habits are walking well on a leash, never having accidents in the house, providing great companionship, and generally being a great dog.

They came to Animal Friends as shattered souls—used and discarded. They left as dearly-loved friends and beloved members of new families. They are the O Pits, and this is their story.

In September, 2008, Animal Friends’ Humane Officers were called to a horrific scene. Multiple Pit Bulls were caged in crates in a dark basement or tied outside with thick chains. Many showed signs of physical injury, some needing emergency surgery. All showed signs of emotional distress.

These dogs were quickly and efficiently removed from the scene, evaluated and administered medical treatment. For the first times in their sad lives, they were then given somewhere safe to lay their heads. Finally, they mattered. We gave each of them a name that began with the letter “O,” and they became our “O Pits.”

Weeks became months while the dogs’ fates were tied up in the courts. They were considered evidence in the case against their owner, a dogfighter. Finally, thanks to the efforts of a special volunteer prosecutor for Animal Friends, the dogs were surrendered to our custody and the true rehabilitative work could begin.

Each dog was assigned to a team of staff and volunteers. These teams introduced the pups to a world they had never experienced before. They learned the pleasures of walking on a leash, strolling through the grass and playing in the snow. They realized that the touch of a human hand could be a good thing, and were introduced to the pleasures of belly rubs. Slowly but surely, their worlds opened up and they began to blossom.

It was now time to find them homes. Each dog had a specific set of needs. O’Bannon was nearly deaf due to long-untreated ear infections and subsequent surgeries. O’Fallon had been injured and was covered with scars. O’Mara needed to learn how to appropriately greet people. O’Hara, O’Smiley and O’Ney wanted to be only dogs in their new homes. O’Malley, the youngest of the rescued dogs, needed to learn how to trust. O’Doogie needed someone to appreciate his boyish good looks and boundless energy and O’Neal needed a family to help her continue to heal from her injuries.

In time, the right families for each of these pups came along. Each left Animal Friends and hopped into their new families’ cars to the sound of applause.

But then—just this July, O’Hara’s life changed again. Her owner, faced with no other option, had to give up the dog she loved so much. We welcomed O’Hara back with open arms—happy to see her but determined to find her a permanent home once and for all.

We will find that home—maybe even yours?—and finally write the happy ending to the two-year-long O Pit saga at Animal Friends.

All of the O Pits will remain forever in the hearts of those who have helped them make this transition… as will the wonderful families who have given them a chance at the lives they deserve. Thank goodness Animal Friends was there for the O Pits!

Cats Live Longer, Healthier Lives Indoors

To borrow a line from Shakespeare about cats: “To be [indoors], or not to be [indoors], that is the question.”

The answer is clear when you realize that the average lifespan of an indoor cat ranges from 10 to 20 years, whereas cats who go outdoors typically live only 2 to 5 years.

Cats who are allowed to roam outdoors face huge safety and health risks, and sadly, some pay for that freedom with their lives.

Even seemingly street-savvy cats are frequently hit by cars.

Roaming cats can get lost, picked up by Animal Control, or euthanized.

Some people abuse cats.

Your cat could become ill from a neighbor’s lawn chemicals or eat poison that a neighbor has put outside for pests.

Even friendly outdoor cats are sometimes forced to defend themselves against other, aggressive cats. Cat fights can be deadly serious, and unvaccinated or sick cats can transmit diseases, especially via bite wounds. These diseases range from upper respiratory infections to feline immuno-deficiency virus to the fatal feline leukemia.

Other animals pose a fatal threat to wandering housecats, such as hawks, foxes, raccoons and even some dogs. Along with possible exposure to rabies, a cat who has been attacked can end up with painful wounds or abscesses, resulting in an expensive trip to the vet—if your cat is lucky enough to survive the attack.

Your cat also might wander into a neighbor’s shed or garage and become trapped inside when the neighbor closes the door.

In winter, your cat could suffer from frostbite.

In addition, parasites such as fleas, ticks and ear mites can leave your cat feeling itchy and miserable. Aside from bringing fleas into your home, your wandering cat could get worms and pass them on to you.

If your outdoor cat hasn’t been spayed or neutered, she or he will most certainly be the parent of unwanted litters!

Keeping your cat inside is also courteous. Your neighbors probably don’t appreciate your cat using their yard or garden as a litter box, and may worry that their dog might chase your cat.

Some people argue that it’s natural for cats to roam outdoors. But when you think of all the dangers that your beloved kitty may encounter outside, is it really worth that risk? Indoor cats who have been spayed or neutered live happy lives: sunning themselves on a warm windowsill, climbing cat towers instead of backyard trees and playing with you or other kitties inside your home.

And with patience, indoor/outdoor cats can be transitioned to live happily indoors—while doubling their life expectancy!

Animal Friends requires our cat adopters to sign an agreement stating that they will never allow their new kitty to roam freely outdoors. Your cat is a loving part of your family, and we want you to share a long, happy life together—safely and indoors!

Several weeks ago, a very sweet cat was abandoned at Animal Friends. He was spotted as he went running into the woods, and one of our volunteers ran outside to catch him.

Once he was safely inside, we discovered that he is a declawed, neutered Maine Coon mix. We named him Oslo.

But Oslo was severely ill. He suffered from an upper respiratory infection that almost took his life. When he turned that critical corner, it was determined that he needed to be fostered to regain a healthy weight. I took him home with me.

I soon saw that Oslo is absolutely the nicest, most laid-back cat I've ever known. He got along well with my cats and dogs. I knew he'd be perfect for a family.

Yesterday, a young couple came to Animal Friends asking for a declawed cat. I told them about Oslo. This morning, I brought Oslo to Animal Friends' veterinary team to be medically cleared. Our Adoption Counselor called the family to come in to meet him.

They are a young couple with an 18-month-old baby and another cat. The family went to a Get Acquainted room for their big introduction.

The picture below is Oslo saying "Okay--let's go home!"

He just jumped right in the baby carriage and won himself a home!

Wonderful seniors and senior-ita dogs deserve a second look.

At many shelters, older dogs would not have the opportunity to be put up for adoption. But at Animal Friends, our current count of dogs age 10 and over is an even dozen.

These twelve seniors, like most dogs their age, would love nothing more than to lie in the sunshine, soaking up the love of a special human. A quiet home, a warm lap and a well-paced walk could turn around the loneliness of homelessness for these deserving canines.

In recognition of their need to find a loving home, five of these dogs have had their adoptions sponsored, with the adoption fee paid by a kind soul hoping to encourage someone to give them a new start.

York

Fifteen year-old Dachshund mix York, currently residing in a foster home, is the oldest of the bunch.

Shamus

Four 13-year olds also wait: Rugby, a black and white Lab-Collie mix, also in a foster home; Shamus, a poofball of a Pomeranian-Eskimo mix; Clint, a striking English Coonhound mix, and Penny Wink, a black and white Lab mix.

Tippy

At 11 or 12 are Poppy, a black and white Pit Bull mix; Freeway, a tousled terrier; and Jojo, a Jack Russell mix. The youngsters of the group include 10-year olds Bailey, a Beagle-Shepherd mix; Dweezil, a Chow Chow; black Lab mix Trooper ; black and white Lab mix Tippy; and Queenie, a Boxer mix.

While any homeless animal deserves a kind and loving home, these dogs occupy a special place in our hearts at Animal Friends, as they are often passed over in favor of their younger kennel mates. All it will take is a special person who values the calm, loving nature of an older pet.

If you’re unable to provide a home for one of these experienced companions, please share this with your friends, and ask them to share it with their friends. It may take some time and effort, but we won’t give up until these faithful furry companions find their forever homes.

It doesn’t take long to realize what Sheri Levine-Everett’s true passion is: animals. This career woman devotes a great deal of energy to running and managing her business—and in addition to her hectic schedule, she cares for her brood of rescued Maltese dogs, many of which have come to her medically compromised. Somehow, she manages to do it all.

To know Sheri is to understand passion. Her love for animals was born when she was a small child and she and her two sisters lived with their family’s pets. Sheri’s fervent interest in animal care, especially for dogs, took off. From animal behavior to veterinary science, Sheri has followed her heart in order to serve the animals that need her the most.

Sheri is a longtime rescuer of Malteses. Sheri provides for all of their medical needs, rehabilitation and care. Sheri doesn’t take just any animal through. Sheri takes on the tough cases. She has rescued those who need thousands of dollars in medical care and even those who didn’t seem likely to survive. Sheri commits time, energy and funds to care for these dogs, sometimes travelling hundreds of miles to seek the most advanced veterinary expertise.

Sheri first visited Animal Friends at our former Strip District facility in 2005 and learned that Animal Friends was out of space. Appreciating and understanding the community’s need for our humane programs, Sheri made an investment in Animal Friends’ growth. She has been a staunch supporter and contributor ever since, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Animal Friends couldn’t exist without the donors who support our work on behalf of the animals. And, without Sheri and her sparkling personality, we wouldn’t have nearly as much fun!

Weather forecasts are often unreliable, but we can tell you there’s a 100% chance that it will be raining cats and kittens at Animal Friends this weekend.

Our adoption floor is a full house, with our kitty condos, free-roam rooms and play cages showcasing a catload of homeless but hopeful cats and kittens.

The holding area at Animal Friends is fully loaded with felines impatient to take a spot on the adoption floor.

Volunteer foster homes are meowing with kitties experiencing temporary TLC but ready for a forever home.

Since we’re out of space, dozens more catty critters we’ve rescued are boarded off-site.

And… we have a waiting list of cats depending on us to help them find a new start.

This is an ideal time to come and adopt. From cutie-pie kittens to senior citizens looking for a warm lap, we have the best friend you’re looking for – short-haired, long-haired, in any shade of soft, warm fur you can imagine.

This Sunday, July 31 from 1:00 to 4:00, we will be hosting our Beach Baby Kittens, a special event featuring music, summer snacks, ice-cold lemonade, and a special gift to go home with our bouncing (beach) balls of fur.

It’s nearly impossible to visit Animal Friends without stopping for some kitten-watching. Cages in the hallway as well as in the cat condos are filled with furry little bundles of love who are natural-born entertainers.

Short and long-haired boys and girls enjoy poking their little paws through the bars in the cages, greeting visitors and inviting them to play. Shoestrings are a real delight, and after a good romp, it’s time for a furry pile of kittens to curl up for a nap.

At Animal Friends, all of our cats, even our kittens, are twice as nice – which means that one donation covers two adoptions. Two kittens can also be twice as much fun, entertaining and wrestling with one another, and providing lots of laughs for the humans fortunate enough to watch. Looking for some fun? Caring for the Aging Rabbit

Good news for bunnies! Pet rabbits are now living longer because of advances in veterinary care and the increased knowledge of their caretakers. It’s not uncommon anymore for a well-loved rabbit to live well past her tenth year.

Just as in humans, when a rabbit ages, changes occur and you will need to make adjustments in their care. As your rabbit leaves middle age behind, you will want to consider the following:

Diet –As she ages, your rabbit’s diet may need to be adjusted in order for her to maintain a healthy weight. Each rabbit has unique needs, and you may go through a period of trial and error before you find what works. For a rabbit that’s gaining weight, a reduction in pellets and increased exercise may be required. A rabbit that’s losing weight may need to have alfalfa introduced into her diet. In either case, offering fresh leafy greens and unlimited hay (timothy, oat, brome and orchard grass) is important to your rabbit’s overall health.

Mobility – Your rabbit might begin to have difficulty standing, walking and hopping. Often, mobility problems are due to arthritis which can result in stiffness and discomfort. A wide variety of treatment options are available that can help ease symptoms, including glucosamine, chondroitin, anti-inflammatory drugs and acupuncture. You may also need to adapt your rabbit’s environment to her changing needs. This could mean using a litter box with a cut-away side, making it easier for her to enter and exit the box. It could also mean using synthetic fleece in her habitat to help wick away moisture in the event of an accident.

Dental – It’s important to have routine dental checks throughout your rabbit’s life. Maintaining a diet rich in hay helps to wear down teeth naturally. But, despite our best efforts, once-perfect teeth can become misaligned and require some filing or trimming to prevent mouth discomfort.

Medical - Nothing can replace a visit to a rabbit-savvy vet to keep all systems in check. Baseline blood work to monitor organ function is important so comparisons can be made as the rabbit ages. The sooner we catch issues, the more easily they can be remedied or maintained.

As you care for your rabbit throughout her life, remember above all to cherish every moment with her!

Jinju deserves a second look.

Poor, shy Jinju hasn’t had the best of luck. This beautiful, fluffy gray and white girl, like many shy cats, tended to fade into the background in Animal Friends’ free-roam room, where bolder cats were more easily noticed. She was with us for nearly a year when she was adopted, much to the delight of the staff and volunteers who had come to love her.

Her new family thought she was a perfect pet, but their cat felt differently, objecting to her arrival by refusing to use the litter box. So Jinju, through no fault of her own, was returned to Animal Friends.

Jinju enjoys the company of other cats, and is a friendly and affectionate young lady when she gets comfortable in her surroundings. Sadly, she seems a bit depressed and withdrawn back at Animal Friends, having had a taste of the good life in a home of her own. She’s hoping to go home again soon – this time for good. Could that home be yours?

Jinju is spayed, microchipped and current on vaccines!

Animal Friends Urges Pet Owners to Keep Pets Safe During the Heatwave

The dog days of summer have arrived! Play it cool by following some basic summer pet safety tips so your four-legged companions can enjoy those hot, lazy days along with you:

* NEVER leave your pet in a parked car! Even with the windows slightly open, temperatures can quickly reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit, leading to the animal suffering severe heat stroke or even death. Your pet is much safer staying at home on warm days. If you see an animal in distress in a parked car, call a humane officer or the police.

* Pets drink more water as the temperature rises, so be sure to always provide plenty of cool, clean water for your pet to drink. Check water dishes frequently and place them out of the rays of the sun. Affix the container in such a way that the water cannot be spilled.

* Outdoor animals must have shelter from summer sun and rain. A doghouse should be placed in an area of the yard that is shaded by trees or other buildings. Pennsylvania law requires the doghouse to be four-sided, with a good roof and floor. Steel barrels and metal doghouses are illegal shelters. Keep the area around the doghouse clean and sanitary. You should remove feces daily during the summer to reduce odor and flies.

* Heat stress and heat stroke pose serious summer threats to pets, especially very young, elderly or overweight animals. When the outside temperature is high, especially if it is humid, an animal can have problems maintaining his normal body temperature. Signs of severe heat stress include heavy panting, increased heart rate, glassy eyes, staggering walk, vomiting and diarrhea. You must cool an overheated pet immediately. Move the pet out of the sun and immerse him in cool water. Apply ice packs to the head, neck and chest and provide cool water for the pet to drink. Contact your veterinarian immediately.

* Many lawn care products can be toxic if ingested. Restrict your pets from treated areas and keep an eye out for chemically treated lawns when you and your dog are out for walks.

* Fleas are often a serious problem in the warm weather, especially for outside animals. Some animals are allergic to flea saliva, resulting in hair loss and scratching until their skin is raw. Flea bites can also cause anemia in young or sick pets. Fleas can be treated by sprays or with products available from veterinarians.

All pets should be spayed or neutered, especially if they live outside. Each year, thousands of pets are euthanized because there are not enough homes for all of them. Call Animal Friends’ Low-Cost Spay/Neuter office at 1.800.SPAYPGH for information about low-cost spay/neuter services.

What To Do When Your Pet is Lost

It takes just a split second. Someone opens a door or becomes distracted at exactly the wrong moment and the next thing you know, Fido or Fluffy is nowhere to be seen. No matter how or when it happens, the key is to act immediately to increase your chances of getting your pet back home to his or her loving family.

Talk to people living nearby. Let them know that your pet is lost, give them a thorough description and photo if possible and provide a phone number that will always be answered by someone.

Contact your local police department, animal control facility and all animal shelters in the area. Each municipality has their own facility for animal control and you can find a list of them on our Lost and Found web page. You should check with the facility DAILY and make sure that they have contact information for you. It is important that you know the holding period for dogs is 3 days and there is no holding period for cats. Unfortunately, unclaimed pets are euthanized.

You should also utilize the Internet whenever possible. Animal Friends has a “Lost and Found” page on our website and we are happy to post a photo and information about a lost pet. Additionally, there are several sites such as telephonepole.org and Craig’s List where you can post information about a lost pet. Be sure to have someone check e-mails and postings on the sites regularly.

If your cat has wandered from home, chances are that she won’t go very far. Because of this, it is critical to let neighbors know that she could be hiding in any number of small spaces. You should ask them to check, or request permission to check, any space that looks large enough to shelter your cat, and even those that don’t look large enough. This would include areas under porches, sheds, basements that have unsecured openings to the outside, children’s playhouses and any other areas that could potentially provide a place for your cat to hide. If you do locate your cat, remember that she is likely to be very frightened and may lash out, even at Mom or Dad. Use food to lure her and try to avoid scaring her into bolting once again. Once you do catch her, it would be advisable to use a carrier to get her back home.

Dogs are apt to wander further than cats, and can actually cover quite a bit of territory. A people-oriented dog will often approach folks he sees in his travels which makes it easier for him to be caught. A dog who is scared of people is, unfortunately, much more difficult to catch and it may require a humane dog trap or two and lots of food to catch him. You will also be relying on sightings reported by people in the area to track him. This requires quite a bit of patience and dedication, but it can be done.

Creating a large, brightly colored, eye-catching flyer with a description of your pet, a photo and contact information is essential. This flyer should be posted and/or distributed in highly trafficked areas where your pet was most recently seen such as intersections. It is important to note that each municipality has different laws about the posting of signs and some will levy fines. If posting is not permitted in public areas, you should search for community bulletin boards which will allow such posting or ask business owners if they would be willing to display one of your flyers. Door to door distribution of flyers or handing out flyers on the street in the area where your pet was last seen is time-consuming and labor intensive, but it may be one of the only ways to get the word out to people.

In summary, get the word out to as many people as possible that your pet is missing, be sure to check all animal control facilities and shelters daily and be prepared to go and get your pet at a moment’s notice. Preventative measures you should take before disaster strikes include making sure your dog or cat has an updated identification tag and is microchipped. Both of these may help reunite you with your beloved pet and give your story a happy ending.

Most of our friends followed the story of more than 60 cats rescued by Animal Friends from a home in Carrick that has since been condemned. Found in deplorable conditions, several of the cats did not survive, and many were in need of medical care. All were in need of a cleanup and a checkup.

Many of you came forward with financial support for our efforts, with costs totaling over $20,000, and we can’t thank you enough.

But now that the story is out of the headlines, we – and the cats we rescued – need your help again. Always full with a waiting list, Animal Friends is now bursting with cats in need of loving homes.Fortunately, the cats from the Carrick rescue – all given names beginning with W – are both people and cat-friendly, and will make great companions.

Despite their rough start, these cats are ready to go home and get a second chance at the care and attention they deserve.If you’ve been thinking of adopting, or have room for one more, now is the time to visit Animal Friends and bring home a new furry companion – or two.

Remember that when adopting two cats, the adoption donation for the second is waived. By adopting one cat, you’ll save two, making room for us to continue to shelter homeless cats, whether they come to us one at a time or by the dozens.

Pen Pal Correspondence from our Alum, Atticus the Cat

Atticus, a blind cat adopted from Animal Friends, has done a great job of keeping us posted on his adventures, although his mom, Katie Tontala, tells us she’s afraid he’s getting lazy – she had to stay after him to write this!

I got a job!!!

Last Saturday, mom told me we were going on our first pet therapy visit to a nursing home. But first, I had to get spiffed up. She brushed me from head to tail and made sure I didn’t have any “stuff” on me (which I usually collect from raiding the closets and snooping under the sofa). Then she put me in my new harness and I climbed in my carrier.

When we got there, about 20 people were sitting in a big room just waiting for me. I felt so special! Mom told them how I was found alone and ended up at Animal Friends. She also explained why I had to have surgery to have my eyes removed and the great job Animal Friends did to save my life. A lot of people asked questions about how I got around without bumping into things and mom explained about how I use my whiskers and sense of hearing and smell. They thought I was awfully smart!

Mom took me from person to person and asked if they wanted to pet me. And boy, did they ever! I didn’t get a chance to count, but I swear I must have gotten a million pets. Some gave me kisses and some gave me treats, and all of them were really, really nice to me. A lot of them told me stories about the cats they had in the past.

One lady was extra nice, so I just sat right down beside her on the couch and put my head on her lap for while. I had a great time and it was fun to explore a new place and meet new people. Even though the hugs and kisses were great, I felt even better because I know I made them happy. When we were ready to leave, Mom asked them if they would like me to visit again some other time and they all said “YES!”

When I got home, Mom said she was so proud of me, and gave me a humongous hug and kiss. She said she was so lucky to have me. Then I went upstairs to my chair and fell asleep with a big smile on my face. It was one of the best days ever.

Most of us are reluctant to see a beach vacation come to an end. But for a special group of Animal Friends residents, it’s definitely time to go home.

The four residents of our Beach Room are cats who have been with us too long. Hippie, Helix, Hamster and Hampton came to us in January from a home where there were too many cats and not enough love and attention. As a result, they are very happy with other cats, but slow to warm up to people.

These brave kitties have come a long way, and are no longer terrified when humans enter their room. But they will require a quiet, patient home where they can come around at their own pace. A home with one or more other cats would be ideal – they would love the companionship and would be great pals for the family’s felines!

Roscoe is an orange tabby with his color blended with a luxuriant white. He weighs about 10 pounds and is also 3 years old.

In football terms, Sam is a tailback rushing for the goal line, while Roscoe is more the quarterback, looking down-field and analyzing the play. Hence, Roscoe seems to be much smarter, is a bit more reserved, observes more and seems a bit more careful. But Roscoe also loves being petted, purrs contentedly, comes often when called and loves to play with his brother and other toys.

Sam is a gray tabby with beautiful tiger stripes and white paws and chest. He weighs about 11 pounds and is 3 years old.

Sam is a petter's dream. He wallows in contentment, purrs loudly and will take pets on his head and ears as long as you want to give them. He especially loves his belly rubbed and will fall on his back, paws in the air, head laid back in invitation. He is also inquisitive, loving to explore nooks and crannies; and loves to play and tussle with his brother, Roscoe. They will chase each other throughout the house, play hide and seek with each other, and play-fight.
